PR electronics helps you set safety first
PR electronics has become one of the world’s first electronics companies to obtain company certification according to IEC 61508* (functional safety)
When choosing SIL-rated products it is important to understand the different ways manufacturers obtain a SIL rating. Process equipment can achieve a SIL rating through less strict procedures like “Proven-in-use” and “Hardware Assessments”.
The SIL rating for these instruments can be based on assumptions that severely restrict the applicability of the unit in question. For example a short proof test interval or a SIL 2 rating that only applies to some of the input types accepted by the instrument.
The strictest and intended way to achieve a SIL 2 certification is through a
Full Assessment.
This comprehensive method does not include proven-in-use data, but is based on the fact that the construction, including both Hardware and Firmware as well as the entire development process, follow pre-defined procedures and, equally important, that the safety concept of the unit is so well thought- out that the unit can obtain the needed SIL 2-rating. It is also important to understand that just because an FMEDA report is available for a specific product, it does not imply that the unit in question has been certified.
Risk reduction achieved through the safety functions of industrial safety-related systems is called functional safety. IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 define four levels of functional safety: Safety Integrity Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 = SIL 1, SIL 2, SIL 3 and SIL 4. SIL 4 is the highest safety level.
